Why Is My Car Not Starting?

If your car is not starting, don't worry – the expert technicians at our dealership are just a phone call away to help out. You might find that your car has trouble starting for a number of reasons. Some are a quick and easy fix, while others might warrant more extensive repairs. From a dead battery to a tank that's out of gas, here are some common possible explanations for your car to stop working.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The engine has a fuel filter that normally eliminates dirt and debris from the fuel lines and the engine itself. The fuel filter needs to be cleaned periodically to ensure that it can keep harmful contaminants from damaging the mechanical system and the engine. The fuel filter will need to be replaced approximately somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 miles. However, if you live in dry and dusty conditions, the filter may need to be changed more frequently.

No Gas

An easy explanation for your car not running – and a simple fix – is if the gas tank runs out of fuel. Some vehicles will have a warning light on the dashboard if the car is running critically low on fuel. You might also have a display on the dashboard that shows the distance to empty. It would be best if you refilled the tank before your car reaches the critical point to ensure you don't run out of fuel on the road.

Dead Battery

A car battery is designed to last for several years before it dies. Depending on where you drive and the care you give the battery, you may expect an average lifespan of about four to five years. However, if the battery endures cold winters or hot summer weather, it may only last one or two years. A mechanic can look at the battery to check its power.

Faulty Ignition

The ignition has coils that ordinarily deliver energy from the battery to the engine. The ignition can fail to deliver that power if it is broken. If that happens, the engine won't be able to turn on, which means that your car won't start. The ignition can fail if it gets damaged.

Bad Starter

The starter is another small but important component. The starter can also break and impact the car's performance. If the starter fails, you may notice a clicking sound when you try to start the car, but the engine won't turn over..
