Why Is My Car Not Accelerating?

Have you noticed recently that your vehicle doesn’t seem to be accelerating as it should? Maybe you’ve noticed this occurring when you accelerate on the highway. Perhaps there’s a problem with merging into traffic when you’re on the city street. Wherever the location of your acceleration problems, Infiniti of Springfield wants to make sure that your vehicle is safe and efficient. If you alert us to an acceleration issue, we’ll look for one of the most common problems contributing to a lack of acceleration.

Foot On Accelerator

Checking Your Mass Air Flow Sensor and Oxygen Sensor

It’s common for your mass airflow and oxygen sensors to become dirty over time. As more mileage accumulates on your odometer, it’s important that we check these sensors to ensure that they’re working optimally to provide you with efficient fuel mileage and proper acceleration. If either of these parts is experiencing problems, you may notice that a check engine light is illuminated on your dashboard.

Addressing a Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor

Your throttle position sensor is a very important part of your vehicle because it keeps track of the angle of the throttle valve opening in your engine. There is communication that occurs between this part and your engine’s computer to make the proper adjustments. When something isn’t working quite right, there could be an issue with this opening not being where it should be. Acceleration can be affected in many situations such as this.

Changing a Clogged Fuel Filter

Your fuel filter’s purpose is to prevent dirt, sludge, and other particulates from accumulating inside of your engine. If your filter is clogged or very dirty, these impurities can remain in your fuel tank, resulting in sluggish acceleration. Simply put, your fuel isn’t reaching the engine in the right amounts. We can change out your fuel filter to capture more particles.

Changing a Dirty Air Filter

We recommend keeping up with changing your air filter during regular service appointments. When you aren’t changing out a dirty air filter, this will prevent proper airflow from going through your engine. When you don’t have the right amount of airflow, your acceleration won’t happen at a fast enough rate. You can check your owner’s manual for more information on recommended service intervals.

Contact INFINITI of Springfield if you would like our assistance with diagnosing an issue that is going on with the acceleration of your vehicle. We can also address any check engine lights that have shown up on your dashboard.
