With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we’d like to take a moment to thank all of our loyal customers, neighbors and friends. We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by their loved ones and lots of delicious food.
May your turkey be plump, your stuffing tasty and your conversation lively! Just to give you a little extra help with the latter, here are some interesting Thanksgiving facts that are sure to impress your guests and generate some fun banter.
- Thanksgiving didn’t officially become a national holiday until 200 years after the very first Thanksgiving in 1621.
- You can thank the holiday of Thanksgiving for TV dinners. Swanson started creating TV dinners in 1953 when they had a surplus of turkey, and an employee suggested that they package it in containers with sides.
- Every year, one specially selected turkey is given a presidential pardon, sparing it from being used for a Thanksgiving dinner. This tradition was started back in 1947 and continues to this day.
- Only male turkeys gobble, and the sound is used to attract females during breeding season.
- No turkeys were eaten at the very first Thanksgiving. Proteins like venison, duck and fish were likely on the menu.
