With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we’d like to take a moment to thank all of our loyal customers, neighbors and friends. We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by their loved ones and lots of delicious food.

May your turkey be plump, your stuffing tasty and your conversation lively! Just to give you a little extra help with the latter, here are some interesting Thanksgiving facts that are sure to impress your guests and generate some fun banter.

  1. Thanksgiving didn’t officially become a national holiday until 200 years after the very first Thanksgiving in 1621.
  2. You can thank the holiday of Thanksgiving for TV dinners. Swanson started creating TV dinners in 1953 when they had a surplus of turkey, and an employee suggested that they package it in containers with sides.
  3. Every year, one specially selected turkey is given a presidential pardon, sparing it from being used for a Thanksgiving dinner. This tradition was started back in 1947 and continues to this day.
  4. Only male turkeys gobble, and the sound is used to attract females during breeding season.
  5. No turkeys were eaten at the very first Thanksgiving. Proteins like venison, duck and fish were likely on the menu.
